( Wahooious McDanielious)

Commonly Known as Wahoo

For those unfamiliar with some of the great wrestlers of the late 60's, you probably wont get the scientific name for this particular species. But for those who spent most of their childhood watching Houston wrestling with Paul Bauch, will remember Wahoo McDaniels as one of the good guys of wrestling. With all the jumping off the ropes and the famous Tomahawk chop, his boundless energy would make short work of his opponents. Many a Saturday night my buddies and me would stay up late to watch our favorite wrestlers matches. Till we reach the junior high and found out all those antics where staged, times were much simpler then!!! But staged or not those flying leaps and making short work from much bigger foes still reminds me of the game species that share his name.

Built for speed with slim streamlined muscular body and slightly fork tail, is a far cry from the overweight, begging for a heart-attack body of Mr McDaniels. This fish though can go through a spool full of line faster than Wahoo could go through a handful of wrestlers in a Texas death match!!! And just like Wahoo the wrester could split open head with a single Tomahawk chop. Wahoo the game fish with those K-9's can make even the strongest of monofilaments look like it's been though one of those infamous Whitewater shredding machine.

Migratory by nature Wahoo inhabit Texas water during the warmer months, mostly in July and August. Prowling the deep blue water far offshore, they are mostly loners and can be difficult to find. Which makes hook ups with these sought after game fish of the Gulf so much fun when finally getting one on the end of your line. Then the adrenaline will start pumping as Mr. Wahoo make his break neck zig zag runs through those deep blue waters. Much like his counterpart Wahoo the wrestler, as he would bounce off the ropes until clothes-lining an opponent in the center of the ring!!! Mr. Wahoo of the blue, will give you your monies worth before snapping you line or rod when he decides it's time to go!!!

Best baits are squid or small fish. Trolling around rigs, shrimp boat or weedlines are good starting points for locating this sought after game fish. Although hard to find, like most memorable opportunities these fish will appear under the boat looking for a table scrape when least expected. So it's always a good idea to a pole rig for those situation when they present themselves offshore. Once you've experienced one of these bad boys of the deep water you wont have to be told twice you be ready!!!! And as much as they are regarded as prize sport fish, they are that much more regarded as a delicacy of the Gulf!!! After a long fought tag team match with one of these bad boys you'll come to understand how they got the name WAHOO!!!!!!
