( torpedious speedious )

Commonly Known as King Mackerel / King

If you feel the need, the need for speed, then a king is just what this surgeon of the water world has in order for you. Slicing through the water a break line speed. Carving up bait fish as if it had knives for fins. With a pair of choppers that would leave Freddy Kruger feeling envious. This jet fighter of the blue will be sure to wake up that half dozed off crew once he grabs hold of your lines. With their stream line body and fork tail they are the envy of the fish domain. Schooling in groups this species makes short work of and band of bait they come across. Slicing up mullet on their initial passes and come back around to pick up the left over. And with their cheetah like speed in the water. Will make short work of any reel that isn't spooled with enough line to sustain their initial runs. Once an angler slows this jet of the ocean down the real acrobatics will begin. Darting back and forth in frantic haste to loose the hook while others from the school flash across your field of view in a Helter Skelter frenzy of activity. If this game fish doesn't get your attention then you are definitely brain dead my friend!!!

Known to school in large groups, the larger of the species opt for smaller bunches of 10 or less. But if you find your self lucky enough to get a double hook up going you'll find this is more than you can handle, even with the most experienced of crew. Found in mostly open waters, the juveniles will some time roam close to shore. Where the off colored inshore water meet the deeper bluer water of the ocean is a good starting off point to fish for these torpedos of the deep. Oil rig platforms are also a known hang out for kings, where the rig attracted bait are easy pickings for this nimble species. Also cruising behind shrimp boat chopping up left over like dogs around garbage cans is also a good fishing destination for picking up a few big kings.

Best bait are the live variety. Cigar minnows, Ribbon fish, and Mullet are the favorite baits of choice. Drift fishing or trolling is the best fishing method to use when trying to hook up with one of these indy racer of the fish world. Once you find yourself amongst a school of feeding frenzied king be sure to keep a few rods rig with flashy lures handy though. In these modes kings will hit anything in the water and there is nothing like catching one of these bad boy of artificial. Fly fishermen will also fall in love with fishing for this particular species of game fish. Mr. King will definitely provide a memorable and challenging experience on lighter tackle.

Although the meat is a little oily to the taste. When prepared with the right recipes is definitely worth trying on these special occasion when you find yourself lucky enough to land a few. But if your just looking for a challenge with an opponent worthy of your fishing skills. The Mr. King will definitely be up to the challenge and then some. And remember to practice the old catch and release when going after this particular species. This will to ensure many more memorable fishing outing for you and me.
